Whittier, Alaska, is a unique destination that offers a blend of natural beauty, history, and adventure. Nestled between mountains and the sea, this small town provides visitors with experiences that are both exciting and memorable. Whether you enjoy outdoor activities, local culture, or simply soaking in stunning views, Whittier has something for everyone. Here are the top seven activities to make your visit truly unforgettable.
Enjoy a Meal at Whittier Inn Restaurant
Start your visit by dining at the Whittier Inn Restaurant. This local favorite offers fresh seafood and hearty Alaskan dishes in a cozy setting. The restaurant’s menu features salmon, halibut, and other regional specialties, perfect for tasting authentic Alaskan flavors. The warm atmosphere and friendly service make it a great spot to relax after a day of exploring. Tour Guide Recommendation: The Quesadillas!! I honestly love the restaurant more than any man should love a restaurant, it's simple in nature, but the building is incredible the architecture is unique and the views are completely breathtaking! ...and bonus, prices are reasonable!

One of my top 'Things to do in Whittier Alaska' is to Relax at Lu Young Public Beach
Lu Young Public Beach is a peaceful place to unwind and enjoy the natural surroundings. The beach offers stunning views of the ocean and nearby mountains. It’s an ideal spot for simply watching the tide roll in. The calm waters and scenic backdrop provide a perfect setting for photography or quiet reflection.
Tour Guide Recommendation: Honestly, I take all my tours here when the road is open and passable, one of the most beutiful coves I've seen in Alaska!

Visit the Whittier Museum, Small but Charming
The Whittier Museum may be small, but it packs a lot of history into its walls. It tells the story of the town’s development, from its origins as a military port to its current role as a gateway to Alaska’s wilderness. Exhibits include photographs, artifacts, and stories that give visitors insight into the community’s past. A visit here adds depth to your understanding of Whittier’s unique character.
Tour Guide Recommendation: This little museum is totally worth the trip, it's tiny and unique and you'll never see a museum quite like it! Spoiler, you can do your laundry at the laundromat in the same strip mall!

Experience the Anton Anderson Tunnel
Driving through the Anton Anderson Tunnel is an experience in itself. This tunnel is the longest highway tunnel in North America, stretching nearly two and a half miles. It connects Whittier to the rest of Alaska and offers breathtaking views as you enter or leave the town. The tunnel operates on a schedule, alternating traffic directions, so plan your trip accordingly. The sense of adventure begins the moment you approach this engineering marvel.
Tour Guide Recommendation: This tunnel is it's own feature! You will never see a duplicate and if you came all the way to this area, you definitely should see this tunnel! (boat loads of history surrounding it too!)

Hike the Portage Pass Trail
For outdoor enthusiasts, the Portage Pass hike is a must. This trail offers moderate difficulty and rewards hikers with panoramic views of glaciers, mountains, and wildlife. The path winds through forests and alpine meadows, making it a great way to experience Alaska’s wilderness up close. Bring sturdy shoes, water, and a camera to capture the stunning landscapes along the way.
Tour Guide Recommendation: The Portage Pass Trail is a stair-master to get up it, like really, it's not hands and feet crawling, but you will feel the burn in your legs, even if you're in pretty great shape! However, the views are absolutely mind melting from the pass! Highly recommended... if you are in good shape, like if you can run a 5k or a couple miles or hike a lot, at a minimum. You can see the Norwegian Cruise Lines port from the pass as well as one of the only ways to actually see the Portage Glacier!

Explore the Town of Whittier
Take time to stroll through Whittier itself. The town has a unique charm with its small shops, local art, and friendly residents. You’ll find interesting spots like the small marina, where fishing boats and cruise ships dock. Exploring on foot allows you to appreciate the town’s layout and its connection to the surrounding nature. Don’t miss the chance to chat with locals who often share stories about life in this remote community.

Go on a Jet Ski Adventure
For a thrilling way to see Whittier’s waters, try a jet ski adventure. Guided tours offer a chance to explore the coastline, spot wildlife, and enjoy the fresh sea air. Jet skiing provides a fun and active way to experience the area’s natural beauty from a different perspective. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced rider, these tours are designed to be safe and enjoyable. Tour Guide Recommendation: this is one of the few things to do in Whittier Alaska, that I have not done in Whittier, but I see them going out, and it looks amazing, and I've spoken with guests who have done it, and I was told it was phenomenal, well worth the price... which don't quote me, but it's about $400.

Coffee and Food to Fuel Your Day
Lastly, Whittier has several cozy cafes and eateries where you can grab coffee and snacks. These spots are perfect for warming up after outdoor activities or starting your morning with a fresh brew. Local bakeries offer pastries and treats that pair well with a hot drink. Sampling the local coffee culture adds a comforting touch to your Alaskan adventure.
If you're coming to Whittier on a cruise, weather embarking or disembarking, arriving to or leaving from, I would love to be your transportation provider going to or from Anchorage! I narrate most of the way and tell you all about Alaska and it's many wonders! As of this writing I have 40 five-star reviews on Viator and Trip Advisor, batting 1000! Hope you're the next one to drop me a review!
